Firstly, you need to determine if you are eligible to become an Australian Apprentice. In general, the following criteria determine if you can undertake an Australian Apprenticeship:
- you must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or a New Zealand passport holder having lived in Australia for at least 6 months.
- you must be an employee of the business. Australian Apprenticeships are not available for Directors or Owners of a business enterprise.
- you must be working a minimum of 15 hours per week (averaged over one month) and being paid in accordance with a relevant industrial award or Enterprise Bargaining Agreement. For School Based Australian Apprenticeships different conditions apply.
- if you are a new worker employed by a company, you may also be able to access State funded training.
- if you are an existing worker employed by a company you may also be eligible to undertake an Australian Apprenticeship.
If eligible, you need to find an employer willing to offer you an Australian Apprenticeship. A parent or guardian may need to be involved in this discussion if you are under 18 years of age. Click here for more information on our employment partners.
