Financial Support for Australian Apprentices

 

Australian Apprentices are one of Australia’s most valuable resources. To help apprentices stay the distance, there is a wide range of financial and other incentives available from the Australian Government.

Listed below are some of these financial support packages. Please note that are also financial benefits made available to apprentices by the different State Governments.

Apprenticeship Training (Fee) Vouchers

From 1 July 2007 Apprenticeship Training (Fee) Vouchers valued at up to $500 may be available to eligible first and second year apprentices undertaking an Australian Apprenticeship in a skills shortage area.

Apprentice Wage Top-Up

From 1 July 2007, Australian Apprentices who are aged under 30 when they commence their Australian Apprenticeship and are in their first or second year of training at the Certificate III or IV level in a trade experiencing a skills shortage may be eligible for tax-free payments of $2000 paid in four $500 instalments.

Support for Mid-Career Apprentices

From 1 July 2007, the Australian Government will provide financial support for mid-career Australians (aged 30 years or more) to upgrade their skills through an Australian Apprenticeship in a trade experiencing a skill shortage.

Commonwealth Trade Learning Scholarships

The Commonwealth Trade Learning Scholarship provides two $500 tax exempt payments to eligible Australian Apprentices in national skills needs industries on completion of each of the first and second year of training where the employer is a small or medium-sized enterprise or a Group Training Organisation.

Tools For Your Trade Initiative

Youth Allowance (including Austudy for over 25s and ABSTUDY) (PDF 100KB)

Centrelink administered benefits include:

  • Youth Allowance for Australian Apprentices aged 16-24;
  • Austudy for Australian Apprentices aged 25 and over;
  • ABSTUDY for Apprentices who have reached minimum school leaving age and who are Indigenous Australians.

Living Away From Home Allowance (LAFHA)

Living Away From Home Allowance (LAFHA) provides assistance to eligible Australian Apprentices in their first three years of training, if they:

  • have to move away from their parents’ or guardians’ home in order to take up or retrain an Australian Apprenticeship; or
  • receive essential supplementary on-the-job training with another employer; or
  • are homeless.
