Most Australian Apprenticeships can be undertaken whilst you are still at school. These are called Australian School-based Apprenticeships and are often referred to as “ASbAs”.
An Australian School-based Apprenticeship enables you to gain a qualification while completing your school studies.
Your first point of contact for information is either Jobs Plus or the careers adviser at your school.
What are the benefits?
- a great career option for students in Year 11 and Year 12
- Years 11 and 12 can be completed whilst starting an apprenticeship
- the program is structured and can take the place of casual work
- a training wage or apprentice wage is paid for the time spent 'on-the-job' with an employer, and
- you are covered by a Training Contract linked to an industrial award or agreement.

There are a number of ways to find an Australian School-based Apprenticeship:

- Contact Jobs Plus to obtain further information.
- The Youth Pathways initiative offers personalised services to assist young people that are at risk of not making it through school and onto further education, training or employment.

What is an Australian Technical College?
Australian Technical Colleges provide school students with access to combined Year 11 and 12 studies and vocational education at the Certificate III level.
Australian Technical Colleges offer Australian School-based Apprenticeships focused on the five priority industries for skill shortages:
- metals and engineering
- automotive
- building and construction
- electro-technology
- commercial cookery
School students are supported through both academic and trade training whilst enrolled with an Australian Technical College. Support also includes mentoring, career advice and business and employability skills.
