You must be able to demonstrate that a suitably qualified and/or experienced person will be supervising the Australian Apprentice and that the on the job training component that you will be providing will enable the Australian Apprentice to become a competent worker.
You must be prepared to allow the Australian Apprentice to attend training sessions and that he/she is paid for the time taken for training, including time outside of normal working hours. For example, a full-time Australian Apprentice undertaking a Certificate 3 traineeship needs to be released for a minimum of three hours per week for the purposes of structured training.
Under the terms of the Training Contract employers must:
- prepare and provide relevant training that will equip the Australian Apprentice with the necessary skills to work competently at your place of business;
- provide appropriate levels of supervision while the Australian Apprentice is at work and ensure that he/she is enrolled with a Registered Training Organisation within 3 months of starting work;
- provide a safe workplace and demonstrate that you understand and carry out occupational health and safety practices; and
- adhere to the provisions of equal opportunity and anti-discrimination legislation.
The National Code of Good Practice for Australian Apprenticeships (PDF 283KB) outlines the full responsibilities for both Employers and Australian Apprentices.
