Federal Government Financial Benefits
Federal Government incentives are payments to provide support with the costs of training, purchase of relevant tools, and move from the family home and other associated costs to commence a Traineeship or Apprenticeship.
Living Away from Home Allowance
Youth Allowance, Austudy and ABSTUDY
The Tools for Your Trade payments are five tax exempt payments provided to support Apprentices who are undertaking a Certificate III or IV level qualification leading to a Skill Shortage trade occupation. From 1 January 2011, the payments will be totalling up to $5500 over the life of the Apprenticeship.Apprentices will be eligible for the those payments where the due date is on or after 1 January 2011. For eligible Apprentices who commence or recommence their Australian Apprenticeship on or after 1 January 2009, payments will be made as follows:
- $800 payable after 3 months
- $1,000 payable after 12 months
- $1,000 payable after 24 months
- $1,200 payable after 36 months
- $1,500 payable upon successful completion of the Australian Apprentice
Support for Adult Australian Apprentices (25+)
Support for Adult Australian Apprentices is paid to an employer or an apprentice depending on the actual wage paid to the Apprentice. The Apprentice must be aged 25years or over at the time they commence their Apprenticeship and undertaking a Certificate III or IV level qualification in a Skill Shortage trade occupation.

Living Away from Home Allowance
The Living Away From Home Allowance is an allowance to help Trainees or Apprentices who have to move from their family home to undertake a Traineeship or Apprenticeship. This allowance is available to eligible full and part-time employees during the first three years of their traineeship or apprenticeship.
- $77.17 per week for the first 12 months
- $38.59 per week for the second 12 months
- $25.00 per week for the third 12 months
Youth Allowance, Austudy and ABSTUDY
The Australian Government provides fortnightly financial support delivered through Centrelink’s Youth Allowance, Austudy and Abstudy payments, subject to the applicant meeting the eligibility criteria, eg. a personal and parent’s income and assets assessment.
