    3 New Australian Apprenticeship Incentive Packages Approved


    1. Removal of Prior Qualifications rules for Australian Apprentices in trades experiencing skill shortage.

    Australian Apprentices who have commenced from 1 January 2008 in a skills shortage trade qualification who already possess a prior qualification may now be eligible for the Commonwealth Trade Learning Scholarship and the Living Away From Home Allowance. In addition, employers may also attract financial incentive payments. Please contact Jobs Plus to find out more information.

    2. Provision of Commonwealth Trade Learning Scholarship Payments(CTLS) to those who complete their eligible Australian Apprenticeship early.
    CTLS is now payable to potentially eligible Australian Apprentices who complete within their first two years of the apprenticeship. The new arrangements apply to Australian Apprentices who complete from 1 January 2008. Australian Apprentices who are in their first or second year of an eligible Australian Apprenticeship and complete their apprenticeship early may also benefit from the changes.     3. Extension of the Living Away From Home Allowance (LAFHA) to Australian School-based Apprentices for commencements.
    Australian Apprentices, including school-based apprentices, may be eligible to claim LAFHA if they have to move away from their parent's or guardian's home in order to (a) take up an apprenticeship, (b) remain in their apprenticeship or (c) receive essential supplementary on-the-job training with another employer. These new arrangements apply to Australian School-based Apprentices who commenced from 1 January 2008.

    Skills Australia Bill 2008

    Today the Hon Julia Gillard MP introduced the Skills Australia Bill 2008 as one of the first pieces of legislation to be dealt with by the Parliament. The Bill will establish Skills Australia, a statutory body that will provide the Government with independent, high quality advice to assist in targeting government investment in training. It will give the Government advice that we can use to assist businesses and workers across the country. Please click here for more information.

    Cessation of Voucher Issue and Termination of the Australian Skills Vouchers Program

    The Australian Skills Vouchers Program is set to conclude on 31 March 2008.

    The government is committed to the delivery of 450,000 new training places in areas of skill shortage over the next four years commencing on 1 April 2008. To ensure a seamless transition, voucher issue for both Work Skills and Business Skills Vouchers for apprentices will cease effective 31 March 2008.

    Have you claimed you Apprenticeship Training Fee Voucher?

    From 1 July 2007, Apprenticeship Training (Fee) Vouchers valued, at up to $500, became available to eligible apprentices undertaking an Australian Apprenticeship in either a skills shortage area as defined by the National Skills Needs List (NSNL), an eligible agricultural trade or eligible horticultural trade.
